MEEKER | Cowboy volleyball is back at it! A preseason in-house scrimmage last Saturday gave the girls a chance to hit the court and get a little playing time together. In his third year as head coach Greg Cravens said, “I’m very excited for our season. We hope to be in the thick of things by the end of the season.” Last year the Cowboys made it to the state championship tournament this and are looking for a repeat.
The 2019 coaching lineup is head coach Cravens, assistants Clea Steerman and Kaylene Turner and volunteer Paige Jones.
Meeker’s team is growing, there are 31 girls out this season, six more than last year, and six of them are seniors. “I hardly ever get transfers but this year I got two senior transfers that can help us,” Cravens said. “Both have been a pleasure to have in the gym.” The two new seniors are Becca Steerman from McClave, Colorado, whose mom is the new high school math teacher, and Haley Follman from Creede, Colorado. Returning seniors are Addie Joy, Kirsten Brown, Julia Dinwiddie and Caleigh Morlan.
The Cowboy season starts at the West Grand Tournament. “Always a good test for us; we will need some time away to learn what kind of team we are,” Cravens said. This Saturday there will be another scrimmage at Roaring Fork and the Cowboys will play the host team and Basalt. The first home game will be Thursday, Sept. 12, the Cowboys will host North Park.
