MEEKER | For the fourth time in three years the Limon Badgers and Meeker Cowboys battled it out on the football field. A final score of 42-28, the Badgers took the victory once again. “We dug ourselves in a hole early on,” said head coach Shane Phelan; early in the second quarter Limon was up 13-0. “There were just too many mistakes early on and we were unable to recover,” commented Phelan.

Just before the half, sophomore Kelton Turner recovered and fumble and returned it for a touchdown, and the teams went to the locker rooms 13-6 with the Cowboys picking up a little steam. Then in the third quarter, Limon added 22 points to their score, beginning with an early kick return, and the Cowboy momentum faltered. At the end of the third, it was 35-14, “We were unable to execute at key moments,” said Phelan, “but the boys kept competing the entire game. Kudos to Limon, for starting strong and keeping it up the entire game.”

The Cowboys now turn their eyes to Grand Valley; they will have a week of rest as they have a bye this week and then begin league play. “This will be a good week for us to refocus and continue to improve,” commented Phelan. “We really look forward to league play and the continuation of the season.” A lot can happen in the next week with rankings, but right now the Cowboys are ranked No. 4 according to Colorado High School Athletic Association. Next week there will be some key games across class 1A and undoubtedly some shuffling.

This week the Cowboy JV was also on the field and took on the Grand Valley at home Monday. Meeker was down early but kept battling to tie it up and ultimately win in overtime.

The Cowboys will be traveling to Parachute on Friday, Oct. 4 to take on the Cardinals, games to begin at 7 p.m. The next home game will be Oct. 11, it is homecoming and Meeker will be hosting Cedaredge.
