District champions! Lady Cowboys to host regionals

MEEKER I The lady Cowboys are district champions and will host regionals in Meeker, playing for a chance for the second year in a row to the big show.

Sarah Kracht with 16 points and Julia Dinwiddie with 12 led the Cowboys in a 53-36 win over the Hayden Tigers.

“We came out and controlled the entire game,” commented head coach Jamie Rogers. “The defense did their job and created a lot of turnovers which led to Meeker scoring.”

Dinwiddie and Hallie Knowles, each with 11 rebounds, dominated the defensive boards.

Saturday the Cowboys had a slow start, Hotchkiss came out in the first quarter outscoring the Cowboys 22-18, but the Bulldogs couldn’t hold on.

“Hotchkiss came ready to play,” Rogers said. “They forced us to turn the ball over and it took us into the middle of the first quarter before we started controlling the game and then we maintained control the rest of the time.”

MHS senior Kirsten Brown had 10 points, four rebounds and two steals against Hotchkiss.

Dinwiddie with 22 points and Kracht and Kirsten Brown with a combined 22 points, led the Cowboys to the 53-36 victory.

Defensively Dinwiddie was only one rebound away from going a triple-double for her stats.

“Julia was really alive in the middle of the press and set the tone,” Rogers said.

The district win means the Cowboys will now host Telluride, Wray and Calhan in the Region 8 tournament. On Friday Meeker will play Telluride first and then Wray and Calhan will be game two; the two winners will then play Saturday. Friday’s games begin at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday the game is at 1 p.m.

Remember that only CHSAA passes will be accepted, no district passes in postseason play.
