Meeker to host wrestling regionals this weekend

MEEKER | Cowboy wrestling has entered the postseason. This week Meeker High School will host the 2A regionals for the Western Slope.

Teams attending this year are: Cedaredge, Dolores, Dove Creek, Hayden, Hotchkiss, Ignacio, Lyons, Mancos, Meeker, North Park, Norwood, Nucla, Olathe, Paonia, Rangley, Soroco and West Grand.

Regional brackets will be 16-man brackets, however the first two rounds are single elimination, no losers bracket to wrestle back through for the potential to still attend state.

Also this year, only the top two wrestlers from each weight will be attending state, therefore making the state brackets only eight men each.

The 2021 Cowboy regional team will be: Ty Goedert (113), Trae Kennedy (120), Tyson Portwood (132), Kaden Franklin (138), Connor Blunt (145), Trinden Powell (152), Kelton Turner (160), Brendan Clatterbaugh (170), Dax Sheridan (182), Colby Clatterbaugh (195), Judd Harvey (220), and Tanner Musser (285).

“We have been working hard and looking forward to this weekend’s competition,” commented head coach JC Watt.

Entrance into regionals will be by ticket only, each household for each team has been given two tickets per household. Broadcasting will be on the NFHS network and on the Meeker High School Facebook page.

Wrestling will be Friday and Saturday. On Friday 106-145 will wrestle and the state qualifiers will be determined that day, wrestling to begin at 2:30 p.m. Saturday 152-285 will wrestle, scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.

“It should be fun to host and wrestle regionals at home,” said Watt.

So where do our Cowboys stand?

According to Tim Yount, Goedert is sitting in the number one spot in the region and third for the state. Kennedy is second in the region and eight in the state. Portwood is third in the region and eighth in the state. Blunt is third in the region and ninth in the state. Powell is fifth in the region and 14th in the state. Turner is second in the region and fourth in the state. B. Clatterbaugh is fifth in the region and ninth in the state. Sheridan is first in the region and sixth in the state. C. Clatterbaugh is first in the region and second in the state. Harvey is third in the region and ninth in the state Musser is third in the region and eighth in the state.

The Cowboys have not competed against all of the teams in the region like previous years. These rankings and current estimates and an educated guess based off of previous experience by Yount.
