MEEKER | Track season is in full swing. The Meeker Cowboys competed in the 2021 Clint Wells Invitational, it was a two day event, Friday pole vault in Meeker and then Saturday the remainder of the track and field events took place in Craig.
“It was great to see kids back in competition after two years away,” began head coach John Strate, “as expected, we had some athletes that had to knock some of the rust off, but a few still started where they left off.”
Cooper Main set a new personal record (PR) in the high jump clearing five feet eight inches. Colby Clatterbaugh had a personal best in the 200-meter run, and Grant Cravens had a PR in the shot put throwing 38 feet seven inches.

“It was great to see these three senior leaders step up and show the underclassmen how hard work in the offseason pays off,” commented Strate.
“We also had some very promising performances from our younger kids, specifically on the girls team, said Strate, “We have a great group of freshman girls that really turned some heads with strong performances in their heats. Bella Blazon improved so much from the prelims to the finals of the shot and will only continue to get better. It is clear that her and her peers have a bright future.”
Strate wrapped up by saying, “with a shortened season we look to progress quicker than usual, and will really be looking to both our freshman boys and girls to learn quickly. I am really proud of the commitment of the kids that have come out. It is asking a lot of the kids to give up part of their summer.”
This weekend pole vault will be at Coal Ridge on Friday beginning at 1 p.m. and then Saturday the team travels to Glenwood Springs for a meet that will now allow three kids per event and begins at 9 a.m.
