MEEKER I The Meeker Cowboys picked up two crucial league victories over the weekend, stopping the Hayden Tigers 64-54, and then cruising past the Vail Christian Saints on Saturday 67-40.
In the heart of the league play, the Cowboys now own a perfect 12-0 record for the year. This week’s games feature two more league contests with Plateau Valley, at home, which owns a 5-3 overall record, and Soroco, away, which has a 4-2 record.
Friday’s game in Meeker was billed as one of the two best 2A games in the state according to Colorado Preps. Meeker trailed 18-12 at the end of the first quarter and was still down 29-26 at halftime, but the Cowboys methodically worked the ball into their post players as Dakota Rowlett, Colton Brown and Tyrel Gerloff accounted for the entire Cowboy scoring in the period. Rowlett and Gerloff led the Cowboy scorers with 14 and 12 points, respectfully.
Saturday in Edwards, Meeker’s bigs again led the scoring parade as they outmanned the smaller Saints. The Cowboys jumped out to a quick 21-11 lead in the first quarter on the strength of Brown’s nine points. Gerloff then got into the act as he added eight in the second quarter and helped give the Cowboys a 34-21 halftime lead. Brown led the Cowboy scorers with 17 followed by Gerloff’s 12.
