A Herald Times reader made a suggestion the other day for column material. Initially, I rejected the suggestion, yet upon a closer look realized that the idea had merit. His view was that events and situations occur regularly throughout the community which spark the question, “What were they thinking?”

Loose Ends: This is not what everyone remembers
“How do you re-enact a battle that no one won?” Roland McCook asked Meeker community members when the Ute historian and preservationist spoke at a luncheon a few years ago.
Loose Ends: A hometown comfort
It is probably the most commonly asked question of both town and county residents. “How come you know everybody?” is asked by all ages of first-time visitors to our community. The most recent questioner was a preschooler, who was baffled each time she accompanied her grandmother to the grocery store,[Read More…]
Loose Ends: Shortcuts make for short fuses
“Get out of my yard!” the angry male voice drifted across the wide expanse of green grass. “Oh, I knew you wouldn’t mind,” the woman answered, but stopped talking when she looked up to see the man wasn’t laughing. He went back into the house.

Loose Ends: Lessons from library
It is a good thing that the small-town library of my youth didn’t turn over their regular overdue book offenders list to the local constabulary. I used the library daily, often losing track of the materials checked out in my name.
Loose Ends: From the sandbox
The annual spring fling for state politics has arrived. Gubernatorial candidates are jockeying into position for the fall election. Not long after Gov. Bill Ritter announced he was not seeking re-election, sand was kicked up by possible candidates from both the Democratic and Republican parties.
Loose Ends: Power of one more
The power of one can’t be overestimated, unless it is the estimate of the demographic of an area. Some folks were very upset by the statistical information gathered by the U.S. Census Bureau the last time (a decade ago). They objected to that information being used by the state highway[Read More…]
