MEEKER I Barone Middle School girls’ basketball teams began their season Saturday against Craig Middle School. Both the seventh- and eighth-grade teams had games for A, B and C levels.
The seventh grade A-team started the morning off with a very effective press, taking control of the game in the second quarter, carrying an eight-point lead into half. The game was close early with first-game jitters, creating a lower shooting percentage. But once the lady Cowboys scored, their defense triggered their offense.
Meeker held the lead through the second half and came away with a great first win of the season, setting the stage for an outstanding C-team matchup that went into overtime. The Meeker girls played hard and had great teamwork that eventually led the team to a two-point victory.
The B-team played well but fell behind in the second quarter. The team never made up the deficit as the game continued. Overall, the seventh graders looked very strong to start their season and they look forward to their game tonight and Saturday against Soroco and Steamboat Springs.
The eighth-grade team had an outstanding C-team game as well. The game was extremely close and came down to the end before Craig won the game.
The Bulldogs’ defense proved to be a challenge for the A and B teams, but coach Kris Casey expects great improvement from the girls, four of whom had never played the game before this season. They are all working very hard in practice and certainly have a great deal of basketball ahead of them.
