Busy weekend for seventh, eighth grade girls b-ball

The seventh grade girls basketball team had a busy weekend.  On Friday, January 19, the B team traveled to Soroco.

“Despite a gallant effort, the team lost by one point, 9-10,” commented head coach Mindy Finley.

The leading scorer for the Cowboys was Maite Carmargo with four, Tacey Toon with three and Sophia Moody chipped in two. The B team will have another opportunity to beat the Soroco Rams at home on January 27.

On January 20, both A and B teams traveled to Steamboat Springs where they played a total of five games.  The A team beat Steamboat Springs and Sleeping Giant.  Against Steamboat Springs, the score was 32-15.  Leading scorer for the Cowboys was Raegan Clatterbaugh with 17, followed by Haigen Harrison with five, Carmargo four and Jenna Pelloni with two.  Against Sleeping Giant, the Cowboys dominated the game and the final score was 28-4; the leading scorer was once again Clatterbaugh with 18 while Mia Hernandez, Carmargo, Hattie Brennan, Haigen Harrison and Pelloni all chipped in two points each.

“Both wins were a team effort with the Cowboys playing great on both sides of the ball,” said Finley.

The B team had three games, going 2-1 on the day.  They beat Craig 12-10 after falling to Craig last week.  The leading scorer in this game was Jordyn Garcia with six, while Joslin Spieth, Carmargo and Makenzie Denney each had two points.  The second game of the day for the B team was a nail biter.  Meeker lost in double overtime to Sleeping Giant 10-12.  In this game, leading scorer was Sophia Moody with four.  Alexandria Trout, Makenzie Denney and Savanah Petrocco all had two points each.  And the last game of the day saw Meeker winning by a score of 20-4.  “The final game was a total team effort as seven players contributed offensively,” commented Finley.

Garcia, Trout and Kinnley Smith all had four points each. Spieth, Toon, Denney, and Moody each had two points.

“The eighth grade teams had an exciting weekend,” commented Claudia Bullen. “The team traveled to Soroco on Friday and lost a tough game 17-28”.

Norah Loar had four, Julie Kracht hit a great three, Hailey Schwartz had two, Braylin Pena had four, Berkli Harvey had two and Sienna Rolen had three.  On Saturday both teams traveled to Steamboat. “The team’s last game was a tough one with a loss of 13-27,” said Bullen. Gardner was the lead scorer with five,  Kracht had two, Pena had two, Payton Arnold had two, and Chintala had two.

“The team dug deep and held Steamboat at only four more points in the second half,” commented Bullen.
