Mistakes plague Panthers

RANGELY — Special team turnovers proved to be the undoing of the Panthers during the weekend. The Altamont Longhorns took advantage of a poor snap and a blocked punt to defeat the Panthers 25-12.

Lady Panthers play under new coach

RANGELY — The Rangely High School volleyball team will open the season with a new head coach. Jimmie Mergelman, who has coached the girls basketball team the past two years, has replaced long-time coach Dave Walck, who is now the assistant principal and activities director for Grand Valley.

Grandsons battle in Junction ‘Cage Wars’

RANGELY — Richard and Elizabeth Benton had plenty of reason to cheer last Saturday. Doubly, so. The Bentons, who live in Rangely, had two grandsons compete in the Mixed Martial Arts Cage Wars in Grand Junction.

Broderick wins women’s title

RANGELY — Teresa Broderick won the 2008 women’s club championship on Saturday afternoon when she beat five-time defending champion Ellen Boudreaux by only two strokes. Broderick also had no birdies in the 18-hole contest, while Boudreaux managed one.

V’ballers take fourth at Fowler tournament

RANGELY — Last week, 10 players from the Rangely Panther volleyball team traveled to Fowler, Colo., to compete in the Southern Colorado Summer Classic 2008 Volleyball Tournament.
