Cowboy cross country tackles high altitude course

MEEKER | Cowboy cross country made the trip up to the Grand Mesa for the Cedaredge Invitational this past Friday.

“It was our first time on this course, and the views and temperature were excellent,” commented coach Marty Casey. The course begins and ends in the County Line Trails parking lot, and utilizes several of the area trails. It claims the distinction of being the “highest elevation cross country meet in the state at 10,800 ft.”

Junior Haylee Steele was Meeker’s sole competitor in the girls’ race, taking 53rd place in 35:53.

The occasional rough terrain coupled with the thinner air was apparent in the finish times this week, but Meeker still managed a sixth-place team score in the boys’ race.

Wyatt Rollins led the squad again this week in 21:46 for 11th place. Brad Conrado finished in 22nd place at 23:14.  Cameron Hanberg came in at 23:26, and 24th. Just a few runners behind in 31st place, Ryan Hanberg ran a 24:15. Ashton Tapia crossed the finish line in 39th place at 25:03, with his brother Aidan at 25:55 for 48th place. Haydyn Massey was right on his heels, 49th at 25:58.  Kyran Kracht and Lucas Robinson were our next two finishers, 75th and 77th places, at 33:57 and 34:23 respectively. Asa Scofield ran a 37:02 for 84th place.

“This is a great venue for early season racing, as the high temperature was only around 60 degrees. We had some mixed reviews from our team, but I could certainly see racing these trails again. I thought everyone performed well considering the conditions: Kyran, for instance, was only a minute behind last week’s time, and this is a much harder course,” said Coach Casey. “The team is really shaping up!”

The Meeker High School cross country team took to the “highest elevation cross country meet in the state at 10,800 ft.” at the Cedaredge Invitational last weekend. The boys’ team managed a sixth-place team score.
