MEEKER I The Cowboys wrapped up their league play a week early so that they could compete in the Heart of the Rockies Volleyball Invitational in Buena Vista.
“We went 3-1 at a very good Buena Vista tournament and we got exactly what I was hoping for out of the tournament,” commented head coach Greg Cravens.
Meeker began their pool play against the 3A Middle Park, winning 2-0, the set scores were 25-21 and 25-12. The team turned around and played the very next game taking on Buena Vista and winning 2-0, 25-18 and 25-14.
“We had to adjust our line up for the weekend because of a stomach virus and we got the opportunity to play some younger players,” said Cravens. “I’m very proud of Grace Roberts and Reese Clatterbaugh’s performance this weekend, they stepped up when the team needed them.”
The team suffered its first loss of the season to 3A Centauri, in the third game of the tournament.
“Centauri played at a faster pace than we are used to seeing and it was good for the girls to play against them,” commented Cravens.
The Cowboys lost in two sets to Centauri, 23-25 and 10-25.
The loss to 2-1 record in their pool play meant the Cowboys then went on to play for third place against another 3A team.
“We always tell the girls that they need to be ready if ever called upon and these two played well for us,” said Cravens. “We also moved Ainsley out of her normal position and she provided us with some good offense from the outside position. We ended up third with a win against Bennett.”
Meeker went 2-0 against Bennet, winning 26-24 and 25-14.
The Cowboys will be hosting a regional for a three team pool of number 2 Meeker, number 35 Mancos, and number 23 Sanford. The Cowboys will begin facing off with Mancos first at 2 PM on Friday afternoon at Meeker High School. The next game will be Mancoa versus Sanford, and in the final game Meeker meets Sanford. The winner of these games will continue onto the state tournament in Colorado Springs next weekend. Games are scheduled for 2 p.m., 4 p.m., and 6 p.m., however they will proceed faster if the previous game ends earlier.
