MEEKER | After a year of duals and only two teams allowed in the gym at a time, Cowboy wrestling has returned to something resembling a normal season.
The varsity of Trae Kennedy at 120 lbs., Owen Hanneman (126), Ty Goedert (132), Abe Maupin (138), Rowdy Rosendahl (152), Connor Blunt (160), Kelton Turner (170), Brendan Clatterbaugh (182), Hayden Shults (220), and Tanner Musser (285) traveled to the Colorado Mesa University (CMU) Maverick Duals.
The remaining wrestlers went to Olathe for a very competitive JV tournament.
At CMU the team dualed five different teams starting with Gunnison, Delta, Palisade, Grand Junction and then Central. Goedert, Turner, Clatterbaugh and Musser all finished the day undefeated. As a team Meeker was 3-2 on the day, losing to Grand Junction and Central.
Head coach JC Watt and JV coach Carl Padilla both said they were “very pleased with the attitude and effort of the kids this weekend.”
Watt commented that the kids “wrestled tough and were in really good condition for the first tournament of the year.”
At the JV tournament in Olathe all the kids got four matches and most of them got five. For some, this single tournament was more mat time then they got all of last year. Cade Blunt took his weight class; Clay Crawford and Trevor Keys took second; Teagan Sheridan, Tate Kerchel and Trinden Powell all took third place.
This weekend the team is split again. The JV will be in Rifle Saturday while the varsity is in Cedaredge Friday with duals against Cedaredge and Buena Vista beginning at 5 p.m. and then an all day tournament in Delta on Saturday.
