MEEKER | In a disappointing turn of events, the Cowboys were only able to play one of the two scheduled games last weekend. Thursday, Grand Valley came to Meeker and the Cowboys sent them home with a loss 61-44.
“The kids are playing really well and really hard,” said head coach Klark Kindler, “I am really liking their effort and how hard they are playing.”
At the half against the Cardinals, the Cowboys were up 36-22. Led by Liam Deming and Ethan Drake, with 17 and 14 points respectively, the team had lots of contribution from the bench.
Defensively, the team held the Cardinals in the first and third quarters to single digits. Top rebounders were Zagar Brown and Ryan Phelan each with nine, and Braydon Garcia with eight.
Friday’s game against Vail Mountain, canceled due to weather, has been rescheduled for Feb. 24. The Snake River game that was to take place this week will not be played. Instead the Cowboys will take on Aspen today in Aspen, and it will only be the boys traveling to this game.
Just like all of the other sports this year, post-season for basketball looks much different than in past years. There will be no districts this year, instead the number one team in the north division of the western slope and the number one team in the south division of the western slope will meet to determine who the district champion is.
Regionals is determined using the Packard ranking, which is a combined ranking system that includes RPI, Coaches Poll, and Max Preps. The top 24 teams will go to regionals and the first round of regionals will be played at home sites, with only the top two teams traveling to Colorado Springs for the final big show of the year.
