Cowboys dominate at Parachute’s Great Eight

The Meeker Cowboys dominated the Great Eight Duals in Parachute, winning the entire event with great finals matches against hosts Grand Valley. Five rounds of duals and no one came close to matching the Cowboys on the mat with wins over Coal Ridge 69-11, Basalt 66-15, Hayden 52-15, Moffat County 66-18, and Grand Valley 48-36.

“Our smaller weights wrestled really tough and gave us some great matches,” commented head coach JC Watt.

Koy Weber finished the tournament wrestling a tough match against a ranked Grand Valley wrestler. Weber lost in overtime in a match that could have gone either way. Holton Harvey and Reed Goedert both went undefeated on the day.

”Those tough matches like Koy’s are not detrimental and are really good spots for the kids to be in,” said Watt.

132-pounder Clay Crawford finished the day 5-0, wrestling four times and pinning three.

Tanner Goodwin wrestled smart going 3-2. Jake Blazon also went undefeated.

“Jake had a good tournament,” commented Watt, “he wrestled really smart and these matches are getting him ready for regionals.”

The upper weights did not get a lot of matches. Cade Blunt, Brendan Clatterbaugh, Judd Harvey  and Noah Leblanc all finished undefeated with more forfeits than matches.

The Cowboys hosted their first matches of the year Tuesday against the rivals from the north, Moffat County. Meeker dominated each match winning them all and pinning all but one opponent to win the dual 81-0. Wrestling Tuesday was Holton, Goedert, Weber, Coy Richardson, Crawford, Dawson Richardson, Tanner Goodwin, Tristin Rollins, Orion Musser, Blazon, Blunt, Clatterbaugh, Judd and LeBlanc.

This weekend the team will host the Meeker Duals featuring 10 teams. They include Basalt, Coal Ridge, Delta, Grand Valley, Hayden, Meeker, Olathe, Rangely, Soroco and Steamboat Springs. Meeker will only have one team this year and then will use the JV wrestlers to fill in open weights on other teams. Matches will begin at 9:30 a.m.
