MEEKER I Cedaredge got a double dose of the Cowboys over the weekend, first losing to volleyball then being mercy ruled by the football team with seven minutes left in the third quarter.
“It was a good start to the game,” began Shane Phelan, Meeker Cowboy head coach, “special teams set us up with good field position, the defense set the tone early and the offense got things rolling.”
The Cowboys were on the board within two plays of their first possession and a running clock began with seven minutes left in the third quarter. The JV played the rest of the game and the Bruins were unable to score until the last 17 seconds left in the game.
“A lot of kids contributed this week and made plays for us,” commented Phelan.
Scoring for the Cowboys was Trinden Powell with a 23 yard reception, this was his first touchdown of the year. Liam Deming ran one in after a good reception, Deming also had a great interception that was walked back due to a penalty on the Cowboys.
Kelton Turner scored three rushing touchdowns, Ryan Sullivan ran one in, and John Hampton Hightower had 4 PAT’s.
Defensively there were a lot of kids that made the stats this week. Elijah leblanc led with eight tackles, Zach Eskelson had six, and Zach Simonsen and Connor Blunt each had five.
The final score of the game was 40-6 and this week the Cowboys have moved up into the top 10 according to MaxPreps.
The Cowboys now turn their attention to Buena Vista for a 1 p.m. kickoff on Saturday. The last two meetings of these teams were both in the post season playoffs.
“Buena Vista is a perennial powerhouse and play off contender,” said Phelan.
Buena Vista is currently ranked fourth and has a 4-0 record.
“Buena Vista has great numbers, good kids, and we are excited for the task at hand,” commented Phelan.
The Demons quarterback is a dual threat QB who throws it as well as he runs it, they have several backs that are dynamic runners and this makes them a well balanced team.
The original schedule called had the game set for Friday evening, however, this game has been changed and is now going to be played Saturday, still in Buena Vista, kickoff at 1 p.m.
