MEEKER | The Meeker Cowboys boys wrestling continued their season last Thursday on the road with a triangular dual in Cedaredge before competing in the two-day Western Slope Showdown in Montrose, gaining valuable mat time and early-season confidence against strong competition.
Meeker began Thursday night in Cedaredge against the host Bruins, falling 51–29 in a dual that featured momentum swings and a strong showing through the middle of the Cowboys’ lineup. Cedaredge jumped out to an early lead with back-to-back first-period falls at 120 and 126, but Meeker responded at 132 when Lyam Richardson earned a pin to put the Cowboys on the board.
Junior Koy Weber followed with a first-period fall at 138, and senior Holton Harvey added another pin at 144. Kael Overton continued the run with a fall at 150, while Tristin Rollins picked up a technical fall at 157 to pull Meeker back within reach midway through the dual. Cedaredge closed strong with wins in the upper weights, along with a decision at 165 and several late falls to secure the team victory.
Despite the result, head coach Stryker Lane said he was encouraged by the team’s competitiveness and willingness to battle.
“We saw a lot in our duals,” Lane said. “The thing I was most impressed with was our willingness to compete. We’re focused on improving right now and not basing everything on results. Weight class decisions are about what gives us the best net-positive effect as a team.”
Meeker rebounded later in the evening against Buena Vista, battling the Demons to a 41–41 tie before earning the dual win on tiebreaker criteria due to fewer forfeited points. The Cowboys gave up early points at 113 and 120 but responded with a strong stretch through the middle weights.
Eli Rundberg, Tommy Jensen and Weber each earned forfeit victories at 126, 132 and 138, swinging momentum back to Meeker. Harvey followed with a technical fall at 144, and Overton added a first-period pin at 150. After Buena Vista regained ground in the upper weights, Meeker’s earlier surge proved enough to secure the tiebreaker victory.
Overton said fast starts have been a key focus for him early in the season.
“Early in matches, I’ve been doing a good job of staying disciplined with my offense and attacking right away,” Overton said. “First-period pins are huge for team energy in a dual. They get momentum on our side and give everyone confidence going into the next matches.”
Lane said navigating momentum swings — especially in tight duals — has been an important learning experience.
“We just try to stay focused on what we need to do,” Lane said. “I always tell the guys not to wrestle other matches while they’re preparing for their own.”
Following the triangular, Meeker traveled to Montrose for the Western Slope Showdown, bringing seven varsity wrestlers and 15 junior varsity competitors. Weber led the varsity group with a second-place finish at 138 pounds, while Overton (144), Cooper Maupin (150) and senior Drake Jones (175) each placed fourth.
Lane said the four placers provided a useful snapshot of where the program stands.
“We wrestled a lot of matches this weekend,” he said. “We’re still seeing areas that need work across the board, but we’re making good gains in conditioning, which is expected at this point in the season.”
Weber said his early-season success has come from relentless pressure and improved conditioning.
“At the duals I found success in breaking my kids and keeping pressure on them,” Weber said. “These early duals help prepare me for big tournaments like the Warrior Classic by giving me mat time and showing me what I need to improve. I feel like my wrestling is progressing really well, and I’m starting to expand my style.”
At the junior varsity level, Orion Musser (190) and Richardson (132) each won their weight classes, while Jonah Christensen finished second at 190. Rundberg placed third at 126, Jensen took third at 144, Tanner Shults finished fourth at 144, Jaxen Mills placed fifth at 165, Wyatt Ross finished fifth at 175, and Landon Robinson placed sixth at 215.
Meeker finished 16th overall at the tournament with 71 team points.
Lane said preparation now shifts toward the grind of another major event.
“Chain wrestling and getting off the bottom are big focuses this week,” Lane said. “Success right now is seeing growth in the areas we’re working on and gaining confidence that we belong with the best competition we’ll see.”
The Cowboys return to the road this weekend to compete in the two-day Warrior Classic on Dec. 19–20 in Clifton, while Meeker’s junior varsity squad will compete in a separate two-day tournament hosted by Fruita Monument High School.
