MEEKER I For the third time this year Cowboy football has dominated their opponent achieving a running clock, and for the second time they completely shut the other team out. Cedaredge fell 40-0 in a game that can only be described as rainy, soggy, and muddy.
“What boy doesn’t like playing in the mud,” commented head coach Andy Coryell, “the boys really enjoyed this game and had a lot of fun.”
“The game was a ton of fun,” commented Connor Blunt, “you really didn’t notice the rain, just all of us working well together to get the game done.”
The rain let up at the half but the Cowboys didn’t, making it to the running clock in the third, it allowed coach Coryell to play some kids from the bench.
“The kids have practiced hard and even though not all play varsity, they contribute to the team’s success every day by being at practice, so we take the entire team on the road when we start league play,” said Coryell.
The 50 person strong team loaded up in two buses for the trip in what Coryell describes as one of the biggest positives from this game.
“When we win big, one of the best things is that we get a lot of kids playing time in a varsity level game, they get to experience what it will be like for them in one or two years,” commented Coryell.
The slick field and ball didn’t stop the Cowboys from racking up some stats, led by Connor who carried for 196 yards and had two touchdowns.
Five other Cowboys scored, Ryan Sullivan, Clay Crawford, Cade Blunt, Jace Mobley, and Jake Blazon, who has now kicked for 21 points this season.
Elijah LeBlanc who was out for the Roaring Fork game was back and once again leading in tackles with Teagan Sheridan and Dagon Dade.
Buena Vista is next on the schedule, and one of the most important games for the Cowboys as it has league implications. Last year the Cowboys faced them twice, losing by one both times, and this year BV lost to Gunnison in a game where they had 107 yards of penalties and to Limon 50-13. The Cowboys have suffered their only loss to Limon, 14-40, BV allowed more points but scored in the first two quarters of the game.
“Buena Vista runs an offense that we don’t really see in any of our other opponents,” said Coryell, “and they have four kids that are seniors that have been starting varsity since they were freshman, so they have had a lot of years to learn how to run it very efficiently.”
Game time is 7 p.m. at Starbucks Stadium.
