Cowboys steady after loss, improve to 12–2 with home win

MEEKER |  The Meeker High School girls basketball team split its weekend slate, dropping a close road contest Friday before rebounding with a decisive home win Saturday to remain atop the league standings.

Meeker fell 45–42 at North Fork on Friday, Feb. 2, in a defensive battle marked by offensive struggles against the Miners’ physical play.

“We came out very flat in the North Fork game, and they were really fired up,” head coach Eric Hamilton said. “We didn’t have a great night shooting and missed too many free throws.”

Meeker stayed within striking distance throughout the game and trailed by one possession late before North Fork sealed the win at the free-throw line.

Senior Rylee Sullivan led the Cowboys with 16 points and seven rebounds, while senior Addie Knowles added 13 points, six rebounds, a steal and a block. Freshman Haigen Harrison grabbed eight rebounds and had four steals. Freshmen Raegan Clatterbaugh and Cienna Rogers contributed on both ends as Meeker worked to generate offense.

North Fork junior Alyssa Lovelace led the Miners with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Meeker shot 33% from the field and fell to 11–2 overall.

“After losing to North Fork, we talked about playing a complete game and being ready from the first tip,” Hamilton said.

The Cowboys responded Saturday with a 55–33 home win over Grand Valley, completing the season sweep.

“The girls played hard,” Hamilton said. “Grand Valley was improved, but we took care of business.”

Sullivan led all scorers with 19 points, adding five rebounds and four assists. Knowles finished with 10 points, five rebounds and four assists, while senior Shailee Rundberg added nine points.

Meeker controlled the boards, led by Clatterbaugh’s game-high 15 rebounds, including nine offensive boards. Harrison added 13 rebounds and provided energy in the paint.

“In order for our team to score, we need the ball,” Clatterbaugh said. “I work hard to get rebounds so we get more chances.”

Harrison said she measures success through effort and defense.

“If I’m not scoring, I focus on hustling and helping the team,” she said.

Meeker limited Grand Valley to 26% shooting and hit 77% from the free-throw line, pulling away in the second half.

With the win, Meeker improved to 12–2 overall and 7–1 in league play and ranked No. 8 in the CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index as of Feb. 2.

Meeker travels to Plateau Valley on Thursday before returning home Friday to host Gunnison and Saturday to face Aspen.

Meeker senior Rylee Sullivan goes up for a layup against Grand Valley on Saturday afternoon. Sullivan scored a team-high 19 points to help lead the Cowboys to a 55–33 victory and improve their record to 12–2.
