MEEKER | The Meeker High School baseball team opened the week at home April 21 with a non league doubleheader against Aspen, but the Cowboys were unable to slow down the Skiers in either contest.
The last time the two teams met was during the 2025 season when Meeker traveled to Aspen and dropped both games 10-0 and 9-5. This time, the results were again decisive, with Aspen winning 16-0 and 21-0.
In the opener, Meeker was shut out 16-0 in four innings. The Cowboys managed four hits, including singles from Gavin Allen, Hoyt Garcia and two from Heriberto Lopez, but struggled to generate offense against Aspen pitcher William Marolt, who struck out nine without allowing a walk.
Aspen set the tone early, capitalizing on nine walks and three hit batters while collecting seven hits. The Skiers finished with 16 runs, including 10 earned, as Meeker struggled with command and consistency.
Defensively, the Cowboys committed three errors and finished with a .812 fielding percentage.
In the nightcap, Meeker again struggled in a 21-0 loss. The Cowboys recorded four hits, with Lopez going 2-for-2 while Garcia and Logan Selby each added a hit.
Aspen continued to apply pressure, drawing 12 walks and taking advantage of six Meeker errors. The Skiers collected 14 hits and scored in every inning to pull away.
Meeker’s pitching staff issued 12 walks in the game, contributing to Aspen’s offensive output.
The Cowboys closed the week with a more competitive effort, falling 4-3 on the road against Olathe.
Meeker collected eight hits, led by Jaxen Mills, who went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Cade Mills added a triple and an RBI, while Augie Halstead doubled. Allen, Selby, Brad Nielson and Lopez also contributed hits. The Cowboys struck out eight times and did not draw a walk, limiting their ability to extend innings.
On the mound, Cade Mills pitched four innings, allowing three runs while striking out three. Lopez worked two innings in relief, allowing one unearned run and striking out one.
Olathe finished with nine hits and took advantage of five walks, scoring the go-ahead run late to secure the win.
With the loss, Meeker fell to 2-9-1 overall and 1-4 in league play.
Meeker opens this week on the road against Steamboat on Wednesday, April 29, before returning home to face another non league opponent, Coal Ridge, on May 1 at 4 p.m. The Cowboys then close out the weekend at home against league opponent Cedaredge on May 2 at 11 a.m., a team they lost to earlier this season 9-8 on April 4.
