MEEKER I The number 17 ranked Cowboys took fourth in their district tournament after two very tough and heartbreaking losses.
Meeker began as the number one seed, bypassing the Tuesday pigtails and moving straight to the semifinals to take on Vail Christian after they beat Rangely.
The Cowboys and Saints flip flopped back and forth on the score in the first half, each team answering to the other’s points, and at the half the Saints led by three 30-27.
“We couldn’t make a basket in the third quarter,” commented head coach Klark Kindler, “and it allowed them to win.”
The Saints outscored the Cowboys 18-10 allowing them to gain an 11 point lead, in the fourth the Cowboys made up four points of the deficit, not enough to pull off the win, and the Saints won 62-55.
The loss to Vail Christian moved Meeker into the consolation finals, playing for third against Plateau Valley.
Meeker came out tough playing well in the first half, but only scored two in the third. With just over five seconds left in the game Jace Mobley scored two down low, giving the Cowboys a one point lead. The Cowboys called a time out and when the teams came back, there were 4.6 seconds left on the clock. Plateau Valley inbounded the ball and Mobley stopped the clock with a foul, 3.3 seconds left. Plateau Valley inbounded again and this time made it down to the three point line and “made an impossible shot,” said Kindler. Plateau Valley won by two points.
The fourth place finish in districts meant the Cowboys were banking on their RPI to further their postseason hopes. Sunday, when the brackets were released both the boys and girls had been seeded to play in Limon. The girls will play at 4 p.m. against Wray and the boys are playing fourteenth ranked Fowler at 8:30 p.m. Both games will be aired on NFHS.
