It has been a couple years since the Cowboys met the Aspen Skiers in football and last Friday, midway through the second quarter, the Cowboys had racked up 41 points to Aspen’s 0 and the game clock didn’t stop the rest of the game.
“It was a fun one,” began head coach Andy Coryell, “I thought the older guys were really sharp early, and it was fun to see all the young guys get some time.”
In the first half Ryan Sullivan threw 98 yards to Casey Brink who had 48 yards, Ethan Quinn had a 38 yard catch and Cade Blunt caught for 24. On the ground top rushers were Clay Crawford with 78 yards, Connor Blunt with 63 and Brink with 20. Scoring for the Cowboys were Quinn, Crawford, Connor and Brink.
Defensively Teagan Sheridan led with five tackles; Elijah Leblanc, Cade and Brendan Clatterbaugh each had four.
Jonathan Cardile is enjoying his senior year and says, “I think the best part of our team is the energy and will to play hard through anything.” The win over Aspen comes after a tough battle against a hard hitting and aggressive Limon team.
Coryell and staff played all 50 boys throughout the game, getting each and every one of them some varsity playing time. When Meeker returned to the field at the end of the half, the starters took the bench and turned the game over to the younger kids. Tristan Rollins made his varsity debut leading the Cowboy offense and there was a lot of contribution from the entire team defensively. The Cowboys gave up 14 points in the second half for a final score of 41-14.
Coryell now looks ahead to a bye week followed by Roaring Fork, “We’ve got some things to clean up, and could use the extra week to get healthy, so this bye week comes at a pretty good time.”
Cardile also has plans for this off week, “Personally I’m going to be studying the film so I can read their plays and know where to go faster than they do.”
The Cowboys return to the play under the lights on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. at Starbuck Stadium for the homecoming game.
