MEEKER | The Meeker Cowboys boys’ wrestling team claimed a sweet victory last weekend at the West Grand Invitational on Saturday in Kremmling Colorado. The Cowboys brought down a total of 12 wrestlers to compete in the tournament on Saturday. Nine wrestled Varsity while three wrestled Junior Varsity. Meeker would win the tournament on Saturday afternoon with a total of 187 team points.
The team earned seven individual first-place finishes on Saturday afternoon. Among the highlights was senior Cade Blunt, who is currently ranked second in Colorado’s 2A division at 175 pounds, delivered a dominant performance. Blunt would pin his opponent Jack Steinle from West Grand High School in the second period after securing a 3-0 lead in the first period. He explained what his biggest strength is in his wrestling style right now.
“One of the best things I have in my style is being aggressive. Even if I’m winning, I’m still looking for turns or pins,” Blunt said.
Blunt also discussed the team’s preparations for upcoming events, including a dual meet against Rifle on Thursday evening, and the Tournament of Champions in Vernal, Utah, which will take place on Friday and Saturday this weekend.
“As we prepare for the dual against Rifle and TOC, just putting in some good work this week will be successful. We’re going to be tired coming in, but that’s what it is,” he said.
Senior Clay Crawford, who is ranked fourth in the state at 144 pounds, also earned a first-place finish Saturday afternoon. Crawford defeated Lance Eisenman from West Grand High School in the second-period pin after a back-and-forth match in the first period. He described the energy among himself and his teammates going into their first home dual against the Rifle Bears on Thursday night.
“The energy is high for Thursday,” Crawford said. “Finally getting to compete at home will be amazing!”
The Cowboys will host the Rifle Bears in their first home dual of the season on Thursday at 6 p.m. before traveling to Vernal, Utah, for the Tournament of Champions on Friday and Saturday. Good luck to the Cowboys this weekend as they continue their season. As always, go Cowboys!
