MEEKER I On Monday the entire Meeker Cowboy golf team went to Craig after a great practice in Rangely on Friday where golf course manager Chris Hejl allowed them to work on their short game and play their golf-off.
“It really seemed to pay off as we had our lowest team scores of the year,” commented head coach Willy Theos.
In Craig the Meeker varsity player Peter Hanks shot an 80, Wil Schwartz a 99, Dayton Ridgway a 110, Sam Hightower a 116, and Chakwah Brink a 130.
The JV scores were Drew Drake 133, Thomas Curry 135, Alex Garcia 146, and Nathan Miller at 160.
The next day the varsity played in Steamboat Springs at the Haymaker golf course. Hanks led the scoring with an 82.
“We had a couple kids out but Chakwah, Alex, and Nathan played in the JV Championships at Chipeta Golf Course in Grand Junction,” said Theos.
At Chipeta Brink shot a 90, Miller a 112 and Garcia shot 108.
The team traveled to Cortez a day before regionals for a practice round.
“We were looking forward to going to regionals in Cortez for our practice round and the tournament, ‘’ said Theos. “Peter, Wil, Sam, and Drew are representing MHS and they’re excited to get started playing but not necessarily the drive down there. (5+ hour drive) Peter is playing his best golf of the season and he’s hoping to continue the trend, hopefully qualifying for the state tournament,” wrapped up Theos.
The last Meeker Cowboy to qualify for state was Phil Arnold two seasons ago.
