MEEKER | It was another exciting and challenging week in the books for Cowboy volleyball with one big league loss and a league win.
“We played Vail Christian on Friday and we started strong which is something we have been talking about but we couldn’t finish them off,” commented head coach Greg Cravens.
The Cowboys won the first two sets 26-24 and 25-19 against the now 8-2 Saints. They were led by senior Ainsley Selle with ten kills, junior Reese Clatterbaugh with eight, and sophomore Riley Sullivan with seven.
“Vail Christian didn’t make a lot of errors in the last three sets and we struggled scoring points,” said Cravens.
Vail Christian took the last three sets 22-25, 7-25 and 9-15, taking the game.
Defensively Taylor Garica worked the court with 63 digs and 32 serve receives.
Graycee Cravens and Ellie Hossack shared the offensive responsibilities with Graycee having 16 assists and Hossack 13.
Vail Christian was the first league loss suffered by the Cowboys.
Saturday the Cowboys traveled across the county to take on the Rangely Panthers.
“We got off to another slow start against Rangely,” commented Cravens. “We had to adjust our lineup a little because Natalie Kracht got sick before the start of the match.” The Panthers were able to win the first set 23-25, but the Cowboys shut them down and at the end of the game, they limited the Panthers to just 10 points in set four.
“We had to battle that first set but lost,” said Cravens. “We were actually down 1-9 and 15-20 in the second set but the girls turned things around and won the second set 25-23.”
The Cowboys went on to win set three 25-20 and set four 25-10.
Selle put up some of her biggest numbers of the year so far with 15 kills, five aces, one block, and 13 digs. Clatterbaugh was close behind with 10 kills and an ace. Selle leads the team 2.4 kills per set and Clatterbaugh is leading in blocks with 34.
“Rangely put up a good fight and we feel very lucky to get out of Rangely with a win,” commented Cravens.
There are three very important league matchups for the Cowboys this week beginning with Tuesday’s game against the 5-6 Grand Valley Cardinals.
It is homecoming week and the homecoming game for this year will be played on Thursday when the Cedaredge Bruins come to Meeker. The Bruins are 5-6 and and have two league losses.
Then Saturday the team travels to Caprock for games.
“All three teams are just a match behind us, so we will need to be at our best and make great homecoming memories,” finished Cravens.
