MEEKER I Meeker Cowboy baseball finished its first full week of baseball 0-3 which reflects their strength of schedule and inability to actually practice on the field in any capacity.
The doubleheader in Delta against Gunnison last Saturday found the Cowboys losing 13-14 in game one and 20-16 in game two.
“We didn’t start off very well, we had some pitching and fielding problems in the beginning and I think at one point it was 6-2 or 7-2 and then we picked it up,” commented assistant coach Dylan Mobley. “We were tied at one point and nearly went into extra innings, but our pitching ran out and we ended up losing by one point.”
Pitching in game one was led by both John Hampton Hightower and Ryan Sullivan who threw over 70 pitches.
“Hampton was in and able to do a good job pitching and get things going for us,” said Mobley. “Our pitching will come, but also not having been on the field, there are certain defensive strategies and skills that we can’t practice until we are able to get on the field.”
For game two Johnathon Fitzgibbons led with 91 throws and Carson Klinzmann, Ethan Quinn, and Jake Blazon found some time on the mound.
Scoring in game two Jacob Blazon and Damek Chintala each had three, Deming, Jace Mobley, and Quinn each had two.
“We had a good three inning stretch that spanned the two games where we had 17 runs, so I think we will be fine with our hitting,” commented Mobley.
The Cowboys were set to play a double header Tuesday in Coal Ridge, but that got moved to Wednesday due to weather, and then they will hit the road for a big tournament over the weekend in Buena Vista, opening it with Salida. This round robin style tournament guarantees the team four games with possibly more depending on finish and spans Friday through Saturday.
