MEEKER | The Meeker High School boys basketball team tipped off their summer season by traveling to Byers, Colorado, to compete in a summer camp tournament.
The Cowboys brought 13 players to participate in the weekend-long event. Head coach Klark Kindler, who will be entering his 28th season leading the Meeker boys basketball program, said the camp provided plenty of game-time experience for both the varsity and junior varsity players.
“We play games. Two 20-minute halves,” Kindler said, describing the format of the camp.
The varsity squad played a total of seven games, finishing the weekend with a 4-3 record. Rising junior Tucker Chinn explained that the final game of the tournament stood out to him the most.
“Our last game against Wray stood out the most to me,” Chinn said. “All of us were tired, and it was our seventh game of the weekend, but somehow we were able to pull it together and actually play better than we had all weekend.”
Chinn described what his role on the team looks like which includes attacking the rim and being a strong defender. Looking ahead to his junior season, he’s focused on improving one particular area of his game.
“Overall, I felt great about my performance. One goal I have going into my junior season is to be more of an outside shooting threat,” he said.
The junior varsity team also saw plenty of action, playing six games and finishing with a 5-1 record. Rising junior Elai Powers credited the team’s success to teamwork and a positive attitude.
“The chemistry and just the edge to have fun made us successful,” Powers said.
Coach Kindler said the weekend provided a valuable opportunity to evaluate both strengths and areas for improvement heading into the 2025–26 high school basketball season.
“We played well at times and found areas that we need to improve,” he said.
The Cowboys will continue their summer schedule through the rest of June. They are scheduled to play two games every Tuesday night at Coal Ridge High School. To close out the current month, the team will attend the Colorado Western State team camp during the final weekend of June. Good luck to the Meeker Cowboys boys basketball team as they continue their offseason program.
