MEEKER | Twenty Cowboys are playing spring ball this year for head coach Donald Blazon.
While the team is young, there are multiple returning starters that have been playing varsity since they were freshmen.
“We do not have any returning seniors this year,” said Blazon, “our team is young but we have tons of experience.”
Blazon has seven juniors, eight sophomores, and four freshmen who have joined the baseball team for a snowy start to the 2023 baseball season.
“All four of our freshmen have played ball, one will make the varsity squad for this week’s games and I see so much potential in all of the other freshmen, it is exciting,” Blazon said.
Well above normal snowfall and snow removal which is very slow and didn’t begin until the season started, means the team has been practicing inside.
“It’s definitely a challenge to practice inside, we have a good routine going using two gyms, one is set up for hitting and the other for throwing,” said Blazon.
Monday was the first time the team did anything outside.
“We finally got to see some fly balls behind the fairgrounds grandstands, dry and no windows to break there,” Blazon said.
Blazon is joined by Cody Smith and Corey Bullen on the coaching squad.
“Both of these guys have multiple years experience and bring something unique,” said Blazon.
The Cowboys open up their season in Nucla this Friday with a varsity doubleheader. A winter storm which should have passed by game time will have brought rain with evening snow. The forecast for Friday is a high of 43 degrees and a very small chance of precipitation.
