Meeker girls basketball falls to De Beque in regular-season finale, prepares for postseason

MEEKER | The Meeker High School girls basketball team closed its 2024-25 regular season last Friday with a road game against the De Beque Dragons.

The last time these two teams met, Meeker secured a 54-25 victory in February 2022. This time, the Cowboys came up short, falling to the Dragons 58-47.

Head coach Megan Shelton said the game provided a valuable test ahead of the postseason.

“The De Beque game was a good game to end on heading into regionals,” Shelton said. “It was a tough game mentally and physically, which will prepare us for the games to come this next weekend at regionals.”

Meeker struggled to contain key De Beque players. Senior Ava Vines posted a double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds. While senior Allyson Sandidge scored 21 points, shooting 40% from the field, and added six assists for the Dragons.

Reflecting on the season, Shelton said the team made significant progress throughout the season.

“This year was a building year for Meeker girls basketball,” she said. “We have been working on team skills all season and implementing new offenses. It was a season full of growth, and we continue to grow as a team each week. We have had our ups and downs this season, but it has shaped us to where we are today.

“We will continue to get better as we build a program together. I am proud of the girls who have shown up and worked hard all season. They were challenged with changes and adversity.”

Meeker finished the 2024-25 regular season with an 11-12 record under first-year head coach Megan Shelton. Despite the season-ending loss, the Cowboys secured a playoff spot, finishing No. 24 in the Class 3A rankings. They will travel to face the No. 8-ranked Strasburg Indians on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Strasburg enters the matchup with a 17-6 record after defeating the Brush Beetdiggers 58-44 to end their regular season. Meanwhile, Meeker will look to bounce back after its loss to the De Beque Dragons.

The Cowboys will aim to pull off an upset on the road as they will come into the game as the underdogs. While Strasburg looks to defend its home court in the opening round of the playoffs. Head Coach Megan Shelton described how she is feeling going into her first playoff game at the helm of the Meeker Cowboys, and expressed gratitude for the community’s support throughout this season.

“I am excited to travel to Strasburg this weekend and see what we can do,” she said. “If you are wanting to watch, it will be streaming on NFHS as we play Strasburg, the No. 8-ranked team, at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Thank you all for the support of our Meeker athletes this year!”

Meeker will face Strasburg in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs Friday. Good luck to the team this weekend and as always go Cowboys!
