Meeker High School golf team finishes sixth at Rifle Tournament

MEEKER | The Meeker High School golf team competed in the Rifle golf tournament last week, finishing sixth out of 14 teams.

The previous week, the Cowboys participated in a tournament in Steamboat Springs, where they had a solid day on the green. Head coach Willy Theos expressed satisfaction with the team’s recent performance. “We have been focusing on target golf, and it seems to be paying off,” Theos said.

In Rifle, the Cowboys posted a team score of 258. Senior Wil Schwartz led the team with a score of 76, followed by Drew Drake with 90, Montey Franklin and Alejandro Garcia both scoring 92, and Sam Hightower with 96. Schwartz’s performance earned him third place in the tournament.

Looking ahead to the regional tournament, Theos said the team would continue preparing. “Our putting could use some work, which we will be focusing on this week,” he said.

The regional tournament on Monday and Tuesday will determine who advances to the state tournament. Theos emphasized the team’s mindset going into the two-day event. “The mindset is to fine-tune the swing details and focus on achieving short-term goals,” he said.
