MEEKER | The Meeker High School golf team started its season on July 29, 2024. They had their first tournament last Thursday, Aug. 8, at the Cedaredge Bruins Invitational. This year, there are 15 golfers on the team, the most since the golf program was restarted.
When asked about the team’s outlook, head coach Willy Theos said, “They had their first tournament last week, and we played really well for it being the first tournament of the season.”
This year, the team moved down to the 2A level within the CHSAA league. Last year, they competed in the 3A division. This year, they will take on schools of similar size.
The Cowboys golf team is led by seniors Wil Schwartz, Montey Franklin, Drew Drake, Sam Hightower, Alejandro Garcia, Thomas Curry and Mason Allen.
At the Cedaredge tournament, the Cowboys’ overall score was 250. Schwartz led the Cowboys with a score of 77, placing fourth in the tournament. He was followed by teammates Montey Franklin (90), Bryson Elam (83), Sam Hightower (97) and Drew Drake (98).
“Last week, we placed fourth overall. The teams ahead of us were in the 3A division, so we placed first in the 2A division, ahead of the six other teams we competed against in the tournament,” Theos said.
Next, they played in the Adobe Creek tournament, finishing fourth out of nine teams and first in the 2A division. Their overall score was 267, with Schwartz again leading the Cowboys, scoring 85 and placing eighth. He was followed by Montey Franklin (94), Bryson Elam (88), Sam Hightower (88), and Drew Drake (105).
This week, the golf team will compete in two more tournaments. They will play at River Valley Ranch on Aug. 13 and at Devil’s Thumb on Thursday, Aug. 15. Leading the Cowboys varsity golf team this week are seniors Wil Schwartz, Montey Franklin, Sam Hightower, Drew Drake and freshman Bryson Elam.
