Meeker softball bounces back with doubleheader sweep

MEEKER | The Meeker High School softball team bounced back last weekend after going 1-1 against the Gunnison Cowboys the previous weekend. This time, the Cowboys faced the Aspen Skiers at home in Meeker, Colorado.

In the first game, the Cowboys produced a shutout, winning 15-0. It was a familiar outcome for the Cowboys this season, as they have now won six games by six runs or more. The victory improved their overall record to 8-9.

Junior right fielder Autumn Stallings reflected on some of the team’s struggles in recent games against Aspen and Gunnison.

“One of our big struggles has been hitting off of slower pitches and having pop-ups, but we did very well against the Aspen pitcher with solid hits and very few pop-ups,” Stallings said.

“Another one of our big struggles has been our attitudes and excitement to be on the field, but all of our games last weekend were very good,” Stallings continued.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Cowboys beat Aspen 14-2, giving up only two runs in an impressive defensive effort. The win brought their record to 9-9. Meanwhile, Aspen is currently on a 22-game losing streak, dating back to last season, and remains winless this year at 0-9.

Stallings noted how team morale played a key role in the doubleheader sweep.

“Everyone was talking, yelling, and lifting each other up, and it definitely affected how we played as a team,” Stallings said.

This week is Meeker’s homecoming, and the Cowgirls are gearing up for a doubleheader against Eagle Valley. Stallings shared some insights on how the team is preparing for the big weekend.

“This week we’ve been working a lot on hitting and preparing to face a faster pitcher. We’ve also been focusing on fixing the small fielding errors we’ve had previously,” Stallings said.

“But with us getting our attitudes up, it has made a huge difference in our performance on the field,” she added.

The Meeker Cowboys will be back at home this Saturday, hosting Eagle Valley in a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled for 10 a.m., with the second game expected to start at approximately 12 p.m. Fans are encouraged to come out and support the team during the homecoming festivities.
