MEEKER I After some tough, close games, Cowboy baseball finally entered league play this past week.
Early in the week the boys played Basalt and lost two very tough games to a very good team prior to opening up with league play. Their strength of schedule is reflected in the 4-10 record.
“For our non-league schedule we play some tough teams that really prepare us for the league,” said assistant coach Dylan Mobley. “It has been one of those years where in four or five games we have lost by just one or two points.”
Meeker opened the league to the Bruins, winning game one 13-8 and game two 15-1.
“We started our league games with Cedarege and were able to get two wins,” said Mobley. “The first game was pretty close, we had a big lead and then we had an amazing double play that stopped them and closed the game out 13-8.”
At bat Jake Blazon went three for five, Jace Mobley went three for four, Damik Chintala went two for three and Ryan Sullivan went two for four.
In game two and the 15-1 win, Carson Klinzmann pitched an entire game, only allowing four hits and striking out seven in his 90 pitches.
This week a game between Rangely and Meeker set for Wednesday was cancelled. Meeker will instead play a doubleheader in Rangely on May 17.
Saturday the Cowboys have another at-home double header against the Olathe Pirates at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
“Olathe won’t be an easy game but we will be ready,” said Mobley.
Post season is just around the corner and sitting at number 33 in the RPI has them just outside of making it to the playoffs. The hope is the strength of schedule has prepared them for league play and wins in the league will bump them in RPI and into playoff territory.
