MEEKER | The Meeker cross country team opened its season at the Basalt Invitational this year. Twelve runners represented the Cowboys at Crown Mountain Park in El Jebel among 15 teams. Freshman Abigail Amick was the sole runner in the girls’ race this week, finishing her first 5K in 38 minutes flat.
Meeker has 11 boys on the roster this year, and all participated on Saturday. Senior Wyatt Rollins was the first to cross the finish line for Meeker, placing 15th with a time of 19:59. Freshman Bradley Conrado had a strong start to his high school career, finishing 23rd in 20:51. Junior Cameron Hanberg and senior Aidan Tapia ran closely together, finishing 25th and 27th with times of 20:53 and 21:06, respectively. Freshman Ryan Hanberg ran the course in 21:48 for 33rd place, followed by classmates Ashton Tapia and Haydyn Massey, who took 35th and 36th places with times of 22:12 and 22:16.
Sophomore Jaydon Dollins, new to the team this year, finished in 68th place with a time of 26:26. Freshman Lucas Robinson, junior Kyran Kracht, and freshman Asa Scofield rounded out the team, finishing 72nd, 73rd, and 74th with times of 32:51, 33:00, and 36:02, respectively.
The Cowboys earned fourth place as a team.
“We are excited to have such a great group this year,” head coach Marty Casey said. “We have some fresh talent, and everyone is working hard. Some are new to distance running, and others have moved up from the middle school program. I’m so appreciative of the effort they’ve put in. We are eager to see what everyone can achieve this season!”
