MEEKER I The Meeker Cowboys cross country team started its season with a home meet on Friday, Aug. 20. The start and finish lines were on the practice field at the middle school, with the course using areas of Paintbrush Park and the Rec Center, the Fairgrounds, and including a lap on the track. Four teams attended: Grand Valley, Rangely, Rifle and Soroco.
The boys raced first with 21 competitors, five of them representing Meeker. Senior Gabe Richardson was the first Cowboy to the finish line and took sixth overall, in 22:02. The second Meeker finisher this week, in 23:12 for 12th place, was sophomore Gabe Smithers. Junior Eddie Drussell was the next runner to cross the line in 23:46. Freshman Wyatt Rollins was two places behind in 15th place at 24:07. Gage Richardson, a junior this year, finished in 24:26 for 16th place. The boys were third in team scoring.
The girls race had 12 finishers, with junior Brighton Bair taking second place at 25:09. Aiyana McCook, also a junior, finished in 27:45, for fourth place. Freshman Callie Stout took 11th place, running a 36:10. Team scoring also had the girls in third place.
“It is also nice to get through that first meet of the season, especially for the new runners. Even better to do that at home,” said head coach Marty Casey.
