MEEKER | The final regular season baseball game for the Cowboys ended in a 12-6 loss to Basalt and a regular season record of 12-10. A record above 500 during a year where they didn’t touch the field until their first game and were still forced to practice inside even after that is an accomplishment.
The Cowboys gave up six runs in the first inning to a team that has played the toughest two teams in the state and is one of the strongest on the western slope.
Pitching changes in the second and third innings and Meeker was able to find their stride, holding Basalt to no score and putting up six of their own. Klinzmann pitched the end of the game, striking out five and holding Basalt to no score while he was on the mound.
Ryan Sullivan and Klinzmann scored two runs each but the Basalt pitcher kept the Cowboy bats quiet.
The official end to the regular season came on May 16. There were two teams in the top eight that had games to finish up. At number three Denver Christian had a game and lower in the rankings Holyoke had a double header against Sedgwick County. The top eight will host a four team regional.
When scores were entered at the end of the day on May 16, the Cowboys finished the season first in their league and 20th in the state. The rankings created a league matchup between Lyons and Dayspring which moved the Cowboys up to 19th and they will travel to Denver to play Lyons next. Their bracket will be Meeker v. Lyons and Denver Christian v. Front Range Christian. The winners will determine who continues on to the quarterfinals next weekend. Games will be Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
