MEEKER | Last week, the Meeker High School golf team participated in the Vail Golf Club Tournament on Tuesday, Sept. 3. It was not their best performance of the season, as the Cowboys finished 16th out of 19 teams with an overall score of 273.
Bryson Elam led the Cowboys with a score of 87, followed by Hightower with 93, Garcia with 93, Hightower with 98, and Drake with 102.
Last Friday, the Meeker High School golf junior varsity team faced the Moffat County Bulldogs in a dual at the Meeker Golf Course. It was a successful day for the Cowboys, who swept the Bulldogs 8-0, with all of Meeker’s golfers winning their matches.
“It was a great day being out here on the course. I was very excited that all of our JV golfers got to play—they have been working their tails off this season,” said head coach Willy Theos.
Gavin Allen led the team in scoring with a 92, followed by Mason Allen with 95, Ridgeway with 100, Curry with 101, Roberts with 108, Pelloni with 114, Pena with 117, and Chinn with 129.
Coach Theos expressed his gratitude to the Meeker Golf Course for accommodating the dual by closing the course from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to host the event.
On Monday, Sept. 9, the Cowboys played in the Yampa Valley Tournament in Craig, where they finished 6th out of 11 teams. Leading the Cowboys was Wil Schwartz, who shot a 77 and placed 5th individually. He was followed by Garcia with 88, Franklin with 89, Elam with 91, Hightower with 94, Gavin Allen with 96, Mason Allen with 98, Curry with 103, Drake with 104, Pena with 122, Pelloni with 130, and Chinn with 131.
“We keep having some individual success but haven’t put together a great score for the whole team,” Theos said. “It’s that time of year that we need to start putting it together on a little more consistent basis.”
The Cowboys will play next in a tournament in Steamboat Springs on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
“These guys are working incredibly hard to improve, and it is showing,” Theos added.
Looking ahead, the Cowboys will compete in the Rifle tournament on Sept. 16.
