New era begins for MHS girls basketball program

MEEKER | The Meeker High School girls basketball team is gearing up for an exciting start to the season this weekend at the Cowboys Shootout, and first-year head coach Eric Hamilton is confident his team will make an immediate impact.

“The girls are going to play very hard and be exciting to watch,” Hamilton said, reflecting on the team’s energy and enthusiasm heading into the tournament. With limited practices so far, Hamilton admitted there are some early-season nerves, but he praised the team’s talent, work ethic and coachability.

Hamilton said he hopes to see the team play more aggressively on defense and continue developing its fast-paced, unselfish style of basketball. He emphasized the importance of starting the season strong, building confidence and carrying momentum into the regular season.

The team is led by seniors Rylee Sullivan, Addie Knowles and Shailee Rundberg, who provide leadership and varsity experience, along with junior Kayla Castillo, a returning starter. Junior Josey McClain, sophomores Berkli Harvey and Julie Kracht, and a talented freshman class, including Raegan Clatterbaugh and Cienna Rogers, are expected to contribute significantly this weekend. Hamilton also highlighted the JV squad’s strong performance in early scrimmages, noting how the younger players push varsity in practice.

After scrimmages last week, Hamilton said the team is focused on improving rebounding and ball control, while its transition game and defensive efforts have already shown promise.

Fans should note that Meeker will not play on Thursday, Dec. 4, as one team dropped out, meaning both JV and varsity teams will begin play later in the tournament.

With a mix of experienced leaders, talented newcomers and a commitment to playing fast, hard-nosed basketball, Hamilton said the team is ready for a long season. “It’s a long, tough season, but these girls are up for it. I’m positive of that,” he said.

The Cowboys Shootout will continue Friday and Saturday, Dec. 5-6, at Meeker High School.

Fans can expect fast-paced, competitive action as the Cowboys Shootout gets underway, setting the tone for what promises to be an exciting season.
