Your community news roundup: May 2, 2024

It’s May! It’s May!
“That lovely month when ev’ryone goes
blissfully astray.”

A virtual high-five to anyone who recognizes where that lyric comes from.

There’s a LOT going on this weekend, so let’s get to the news…

  • On Friday, May 3 there will be a cannon test fire in downtown Meeker between 2-2:30 p.m. (see Community Calendar). If all goes according to plan, the replica Civil War-era cannon will be part of the 4th of July parade festivities two months from now!
  • Saturday is the grand opening of The Museum Store at Heritage in the Hugus Building (see ad and article on the front page this week), and the 24th annual dance and tumbling recital for the Eastern Rio Blanco Metropolitan Park and Recreation District. Details are in the ad on Page 4.
  • The sheep are coming! A social media post from Theos/Swallow Fork Ranches indicates their flocks are headed this way on Hwy. 64 to Hwy. 13 and should pass through Meeker this weekend on their way to County Rd. 8.
  • Sunday is Cinco de Mayo if you need an excuse to indulge in tacos, enchiladas, burritos, queso, and margaritas! In all seriousness, Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexico’s victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza.
