\MEEKER — Today is “National Newspaper Carrier’s Day.” On this date in 1833, Barney Flaherty became the first newsboy. Sept. 4 is also the anniversary of the introduction of the Edsel. Anybody remember the Edsel from way back in 1957?
Mistakes plague Panthers
RANGELY — Special team turnovers proved to be the undoing of the Panthers during the weekend. The Altamont Longhorns took advantage of a poor snap and a blocked punt to defeat the Panthers 25-12.
Cowboys corral Longhorns
\MEEKER — The Meeker High School varsity football team opened the season in grand form last Friday night with a convincing 34-14 victory over the hometown Basalt Longhorns.

MEEKER — Members of Meeker High School’s golf team opened the season in Rifle last Tuesday and then played better in Delta last week.

MEEKER — “We hung in there,” Meeker High School volleyball coach Christy Atwood said of her team’s play in the season opening tournament in Glenwood Springs. Meeker lost three matches to larger schools but did beat the other 2A school they played.

Weather helps stop Jordan Fire
MEEKER — Rain, clouds, lower temperatures and higher humidity over the Jordan Fire has effectively stopped fire spread as of Aug. 31. The fire is located seven miles northwest of Meeker in the Windy Gulch Wilderness Study Area.
Oak Ridge prescribed burn planned near Meeker in Sept.
MEEKER — The Bureau of Land Management and Colorado Division of Wildlife are planning a 766-acre prescribed burn to improve wildlife habitat in the Oak Ridge State Wildlife Area near Meeker this month.

RBC — County commissioners are considering different options for the Fairfield Center, once the Meeker Public Library moves out and relocates to its new home down the street.
Meeker resident remains in ICU
\MEEKER — Meeker resident Tom Titus sustained serious injuries from a motorcycle accident Saturday, Aug. 23. Titus was flown to Denver where he remains in the Intensive Care Unit.
