Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago
• The Meeker High School homecoming parade was scheduled for Oct. 2, 1959, centered around a “Roundup Time” theme.
• Phil Sheridan was the top money winner at the Delta County Fair Rodeo last week. The Meeker local pocketed $289 and another Meeker cowboy, Harry Watt, was a close second with total winnings of $259.
• A wildcat oil well was drilling on the Elk Creek Structure, set up on the Loraine Quiett place. This structure extends nearly to Buford and was leased a couple of years ago by Pure Oil company.
• The new Rob-Coy Chevrolet garage held its grand opening. James Robinson, manager of the Meeker Chevrolet agency, said they have been waiting for this showing to the public. The large and modern garage building at 13th and Market Street will also host a showing of 1960 Chevrolet cars.
• The stork visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cooley this week, leaving them a fine baby girl. Karen Sylvia weighed in at 7 pounds, 10 ounces and was born at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs.

• Impaired Driving Meeting. The evening will be spent developing solutions to problems that contribute to impaired driving in Meeker.
• The county’s capital improvement trust fund had received funding requests totaling $1.7 million for this year’s grant cycle.
• The Meeker town council was able to cut almost $83,000 in order to balance the preliminary 1990 budget.
• Local officials reported that they received no more child abduction threats following two reports the previous week in which local girls were approached by strangers in vehicles and asked to get inside.
• Following a ski accident last winter, Dr. Randy LeBlanc was finally given approval to return to work.
• White River Electric crews were busy installing the new lights on top of the poles along a two block portion of Main Street.

The Rangely Times — 50 years ago
• A Johnny Justus to Gary Gurr 30-yard touchdown toss opened the door to a well-deserved victory before a large homecoming crowd Friday night as the Panthers rolled to a comparatively easy 26-7 win over Rifle.
• Judge Clifford Darrow issued an order of the District Court establishing the Rangely Hospital District.
• “There is a weekly editor who wrote: Please don’t pay any attention to the mistakes you might see in this paper. They were put there on purpose for the people who go through the paper looking for them!”
• At Bestway: Peas, 8 for $1. Corn, 6 for 95 cents. 50 lb. Bag of spuds, $1.59. Ammunition, all fresh stock of all popular calibers at popular prices.
• Letter to the Editor: “Do our townspeople know that their children will not receive their vital shots this year? There will be no polio, smallpox, chicken pox, diptheria or tetanus shots at school. These shots will cost our families $6 besides swamping our one and only doctor during his regular office hours.” ~ Mrs. Hubert Hutchens

The Rangely Times — 20 years ago
• Mayor Frances Green made the first “official” 911 call from the regular meeting of the Rangely board of trustees.
• Dr. Kenneth K. Myers was the new dentist in town.
• The first annual Rangely Rock Art Celebration was held on Dragon Road, at a spot christened “Celebration Canyon.”
• The RHS Strike Force was called up twice this weekend to dispose of some pesky Cowboys and Cardinals.
