Senior Day statement: Cowboys cruise into playoffs after 53-0 rout

MEEKER | The Meeker High School Cowboys closed out their regular season in dominant fashion Saturday, shutting out the Grand Valley Cardinals 53-0 at Starbuck Stadium. The game doubled as Senior Day, honoring eight Cowboys playing their final regular-season home game.

Meeker finished 7-2 overall and 4-0 in the 1A Western Slope League, securing the league title and the program’s 13th straight postseason berth. The Cowboys enter the Class 1A playoffs as the No. 8 seed and will host No. 9 Platte Valley at 1 p.m. this Saturday.

Platte Valley finished 5-4 overall and 4-0 in the 1A Central League, rallying from an 0-4 start with five straight wins behind a balanced offense and a tightening defense.

Against Grand Valley, Meeker piled up 338 rushing yards and 376 total yards. Junior quarterback Cade Mills led with 87 rushing yards. Senior Tristin Rollins added 52 yards and two touchdowns, junior Said Rodriguez ran for 41 yards and two scores, and freshman Bryant Turner added 36 yards and a touchdown. Freshman Kael Overton also scored, and junior Trent Sanders caught a 21-yard pass.

Rollins said closing out his final home regular-season game was emotional.

“It was really special because of all the support in the stands,” he said. “I’m proud of the seniors and the whole team. My message to the younger players is to play to the end — it doesn’t last forever.”

Mills said execution and preparation are driving the Cowboys’ momentum.

“Our focus was getting ready for playoffs and into the right mindset,” he said. “Opening up with some passing keeps defenses on their toes. I feel good about where we’re at as long as everyone stays healthy and keeps working.”

Rodriguez credited the unit’s chemistry.

“We all come together as one, which makes offense easier,” he said. “I’m proud of how we ended the season after a rough start, and we’re looking forward to Platte Valley.”

Defensively, Rollins and junior Wyatt Ross recorded nine tackles each. Senior Samuel Conrado had two sacks and two tackles for loss. Sophomore Jonah Christenson added seven tackles, freshmen Preston Amick and sophomore Jackson Elder each had a sack, and junior Tucker Chinn and sophomore Jaxen Mills both had interceptions.

Ross said daily work and coaching leadership have driven the defense’s growth.

“Coach Coryell pushes us to our limits and helps us get better,” he said.

Chinn said the team used the final game to sharpen for the postseason.

“Our focus was toward playoffs, using the game to prepare,” he said. “We keep our energy up by starting strong Monday and carrying it through. We want to keep this momentum alive.”

On special teams, freshman kicker Lawson Anderson averaged 48.8 yards on nine kickoffs, with a long of 57. Senior Holton Harvey added a 15-yard return, and junior Elai Powers had 22 punt-return yards.

“My kicking has grown a lot,” Anderson said. “I didn’t really know what I was doing early on. My takeaway is to treat every play the same — before you know it, you’re playing in your last playoff game.”

Head coach Andy Coryell said the win was a fitting end to the regular season.

“It’s a fun way to end it for those seniors,” he said. “Now we look forward to Monday, figure out who we get and get ready for the next part.”

He added that the postseason approach mirrors any other week.

“We approach Monday in the playoffs like Monday in Week Two,” he said. “We’re going back to tackling and taking care of the football and seeing where the little things take us.”

With home-field advantage and late-season momentum, the Cowboys enter the playoffs confident, disciplined and hitting their stride at the right time.
