Meeker residents woke up to about 1.5 inches of snow on the ground Monday, the first measurable snowfall of the season. Although this snow arrived later than usual, forecasts call for a cold and snowy winter ahead.

A deer on the Colorado Northwestern Community College’s campus in Rangely pauses in front of the large blue-and-orange tent near the school’s ice tower. The tent serves as a staging area for climbers and houses snow-making equipment.
Hoarfrost in Rangely…
Hoarfrost coated trees around Rangely last week as a winter storm warning predicted up to a foot of snow in the area. Several inches supplemented the thinning blankets of snow around town in what has been, so far, a relatively mild winter on the west side of the county.

Although Rangely hasn’t seen a substantial snowstorm since December, small accumulations of two inches or less over the last month have made for passable sledding conditions on the hills next to Rangely High School.

MEEKER I Precipitation in Rio Blanco County surpassed its annual normal depth in early November and finished 2013 nearly two inches ahead of the average annual measurement for the area.

Park Mountain, standing 18 miles south of Rangely at the end of Dragon Road, remained shrouded in clouds for a week in early December as an inversion covering the valleys of eastern Utah and western Colorado persisted.

Hoar frost formed on trees throughout the area recently due to heavy humidity and temperatures in the teens. MEEKER I The last few weeks have seen the temperatures plummet and the cold could invoke some complaining. After all, the cars are cold, the roads are slick, and the kids have to walk from the car to the school in sub-zero temperatures.
