The Meeker Cowboys girls’ basketball team faced some challenges this past weekend as they went 0-3 against Little Snake, Olathe and Roaring Fork and are now 7-8 on the year.
“Of the eight teams in our league six of them are in the top 32 right now and of those six teams two are in the top nine in 3A girls basketball,” commented head coach Jamie Rogers.
The Cowboys have begun playing each team for the second time this season. Having met them once, most of which were very close games, small changes means anyone could win.
“The girls are playing an extremely rigorous schedule and this weekend was no different,” said Rogers. “We played two very physical teams at Snake River and Olathe.”
The Cowboys lost 42-52 in Baggs and then 42-58 in Olathe. Stepping up and leading the team was Rylee Sullivan who scored 23, Addie Knowles put up eight and Charlie Rogers had 15 between the two games. The diversity in the players shows that the Cowboys have a solid group of shooters on the team.
“We ended the weekend with a very long and fast Roaring Fork team and a weekend that was all on the road,” commented Rogers.
Roaring Fork won 48-64.
Statistics information was not available by press time.
“We made a few too many mistakes but it was a good push for our mental and physical resolve and I am proud of how hard the girls kept battling,” said Rogers. “Now we pick up, regroup and prepare for Cedaredge and Gunnison this weekend.”
Both games will be played at home with Gunnison on Friday and Cedaredge on Saturday and that leaves one more weekend in the regular season before the team begins to prepare for districts.
