Meeker High School seniors Will Schwartz and Monty Franklin both qualified for the 2024 Colorado State Golf Championships next week in Golden. Schwartz, Franklin, along with teammates Alejandro Garcia and freshman Bryson Elam from Rangely, competed in the state-qualifying regional golf tournament held Monday at Devil’s Thumb Golf Course in Delta. The Cowboys, coached by Willy Theos, finished third as a team. Schwartz shot an 83 and finished second overall, while Franklin qualified in 11th place with an 88. Elam shot a 93 in his first regional tournament and Alejandro shot a 93 in his final high school golf tournament.
“I am really proud of our golf team,” MHS golf coach Willy Theos said. “It has been a while since we’ve had a state qualifier and now we have two! Wil and Monty both played well under a lot of pressure. Bryson and Alex were incredibly close, missing out by only one and four shots, respectively. We were the fourth-ranked team going into region and finished one shot out of second. These guys did an amazing job and represented their school very well.”
