It was a big weekend for Cowboy volleyball the Denver Christian Tournament for the first time, which gave them an opportunity to meet the best in the state.
“What a great weekend,” opened head coach Greg Cravens. “We put in a few miles, played a few matches and learned some great things about our team.”
After a slow start Friday night at Vail Mountain, the girls gathered themselves and put together a match. Final scores were 25-19, 25-10, 25-20.
“Our middles are seeing a lot of action in front of them the last few matches and are getting better at defending against quick attacks,” commented Cravens. “We are struggling in serve/receive and it continued through the weekend.”
Saturday, the Cowboys were in one of the best 2A tournaments for the season. Three of the top four teams were playing at Denver Christian.
We had undefeated Front Range Christian first and put together a good match,” said Cravens. “We had more serve errors than aces for the first time of the season.”
Final scores for the four sets were 26-24, 25-15, 25-14.
The win put the Cowboys up against defending state champions Sedgwick County. “Sedgwick proved to be a very good opponent and we didn’t have a very good serve/serve receive match against them,” commented Cravens. “We learned a lot about ourselves and have several things we will be working on in the next few weeks.”
Meeker was the only team in the tournament to take Sedgwick County in a set, final scores were 12-25, 13-25, 25-13, 13-25.
Meeker ended the weekend with the host Denver Christian.
“We were very tired and didn’t play our best volleyball but the girls ground out a win,” said Cravens.
Final scores for the Denver Christian game were 25-23, 22-25, 25-16, 25-14.
Junior Ainsley Selle is in her second year of starting for Cowboy volleyball and thought the newly attended tournament was “a really great experience for our team and for myself. The competition there gave us a glimpse into what the state will look like, which was super beneficial.
This week the Cowboys are looking forward to a slower weekend with just one day of varsity play, hosting Soroco, games beginning Saturday at 1 p.m. with C team.
“I think Soroco will give us good competition and will show us what other skills we need to work on, better preparing us for the rest of the season,” commented Selle.
“We are looking forward to slowing down a little and only one varsity match against Soroco this weekend,” wrapped up Cravens.
