CNCC rodeo team fares well in Utah, hosts Spartan Showdown

RANGELY I The CNCC Rodeo Team has been busy. On both ends of spring break, members of the team competed in regional rodeos at Heber City, Utah, and Ogden, Utah. Those events were in preparation for the two-day Spartan Showdown this weekend at home.

At the UVU Rodeo in Heber City, the ladies took center stage. Eight of the nine Spartan girls qualified for the championship round, a first in team history.
All four of the goat-tying specialists earned regional points with Josie Moody winning the short go-round.
Other CNCC standouts were Taylor Duzik, who placed third in team roping with partner Jeremiah Fat and break-away roper Karlee Worthen winning the short go and placing second overall.
The men’s rodeo team struggled a bit with Colton Onyett standing out with his fourth-place finish in bareback riding, and Tyler Stueve placed fourth in bull riding.
Team roping hand Brody Adams, roping with CNCC graduate Clay Crozier, placed first in the first round but failed to record a time in the short go.
In Ogden at the Golden Spike Arena, a favorite location for CNCC competitors, there were great results on the men’s and women’s teams.
Three out of four of our goat-tiers qualified for the short round with freshman Ashley Farrington leading the way. Two-sport athlete Jacey Schlegel won the first round of breakaway roping and placed third overall.
Sophomore Adams continued his spring hot streak by winning the short round and the average in the tie-down roping as well as placing third in the team roping.
With their team roping results, Adams and partner Clay Crozier moved into the lead in the team roping standings for the Rocky Mountain region with 2 rodeos to go.
Bareback rider Dax Koskie placed second in the first round of bareback riding, and bull riding standout Colby Demo won the first round of bull riding.
This weekend brings the team to the third annual Spartan Showdown Rodeo at Columbine Park in Rangely.
There will be 10 colleges from three states and almost 300 contestants vying for regional points to qualify for the College National Finals.
There will be performances Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. with a slack performance Saturday at 10 a.m.
Events include bull riding, bareback and saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, team roping, barrel racing, goat tying and breakaway roping.
Adult tickets are $10; tickets for children and students are $5. Children 3 and under get in free.
The Showdown is hosted by the CNCC Rodeo Team. For more information, call 675-3259.
