RANGELY I The Colorado Northwestern Community College Spartans softball team wrapped up its fall season with a pair of victories at home against the Utah Twisters.
The Spartan women were victorious in their doubleheader, defeating the Twisters by 4-1 and 8-4 scores.
“The bats were not very active for the Spartans,” assistant CNCC softball coach Candra Robie said, adding that fine performances were turned in by a couple of the players.
Kylee Blau had a big RBI triple in Game 2 to spark the Spartans in the third inning, and she added an important double in fifth inning. Savannah Smith had an RBI triple and Heather Garcia had a two-run homer in the second game as well.
After the games, the Twisters stayed on campus in Rangely for a residence hall tour and chat about coming to CNCC, Robie said.
There were two high school seniors on the Utah-based traveling team and they both verbally committed to becoming Spartans next year.
“We are excited to get two great additions for the 2015-2016 season,” Robie said.
“The Lady Spartans had a great fall season and are eager to start their spring season,” she said. “With such a young team, the Spartan coaching staff is looking forward to more time to focus on the little things that will fine-tune this program.”
Robie said the team finished with a 9-16 record for the fall season, which she termed, “More like a warm-up.”
“We just play a number of teams from fairly close within the area in the fall, but the real season is more in the spring,” she said.
“We didn’t play any conference games this fall, and there are no awards given out for this season,” she added.
“We will play our first games of the spring season at a tournament in Las Vegas, then move into the conference competition with our first conference game back at Las Vegas (Henderson) in February against the College of Southern Nevada.”
The Spartans’ softball team will be back in action on Jan. 30 in Las Vegas with the College of Southern Nevada’s Kick-off Classic.
