DINOSAUR I A 2-year-old girl who was accidentally shot by her 4-year-old brother is out of the hospital.
“She’s been released and is in good condition,” said Lt. K.C. Hume of the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the shooting. “She’s a lucky little girl.”
The incident occurred at about 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 4 at a private residence.
“A call came in that a 4-year-old had discharged a large-caliber handgun in which the projectile struck a 2-year-old sibling,” Hume said. “The bullet entered the victim’s right arm and exited the arm and entered the right side of her torso and exited out the right buttocks.”
An adult was present in the home at the time of the shooting, Hume said.
“That’s what’s the focus (of the investigation) is, the circumstance surrounding the shooting and how the juveniles had access to a handgun,” Hume said.
Charges could be filed against the owner of the handgun, but that will be up to the district attorney.
“Not as of yet,” Hume said. “We sent our report to the DA’s office. Since it’s an ongoing investigation, we’re not at a point where I can comment.”
The girl was taken to Rangely District Hospital and then flown to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction.
