Lady Cowboys split the weekend on home court

The Sangre de Cristo Thunderbirds and Lady Center Vikings traveled to Meeker last week from the San Luis Valley to play the lady Cowboys. Meeker lost to the Thunderbirds but beat the Vikings Saturday last. Assistant coach Mike Dinwiddie awaits the announcement of varsity players Sydney Hughes, Kaitlyn Dinwiddie, Deena Norell, Aly Ridings, Piper Haney, Kacey Collins, Taylor Neilson, Kathryn Doll, Kaysyn Chintala, Aubrey Walsh and head coach Greg Chintala.
MEEKER I The Sangre De Cristo Thunderbirds showed up in Meeker to play some defense and the lady Cowboys answered with their own defensive demonstration.
The Friday night game started with a first quarter score of 9-13 the Thunderbirds turned up the heat and forced some turnovers from Meeker to take the lead for a while. The Cowboys then decided to attack the basket and followed up with 10 points in the second quarter to head for the locker rooms up 19-18 at half time.
Meeker came out with a few quick points and took the lead for most of the game, but the Thunderbirds were not giving up. The lead changed with a minute left in the game and the lady Cowboys couldn’t come up with a bucket. The game ended 35-38 Sangre.
Saturday Meeker was reloaded and ready to meet the lady Vikings from Center, Colo. Meeker jumped out early with a full court press and took a nice 10 point lead in the first quarter. Meeker executed their offense and ran a tight defense to pull up to half leading 32 to 10.
All of the Lady Cowboys varsity teammates saw lots of floor time as they continued to work on their precision to put 20 points on the board to Center’s 6 in the third quarter. The game ended as Meeker dominated in a 34-point victory over the visiting Vikings. Head coach Greg Chintala said he felt the lady Cowboys “lacked the intensity Friday night that they showed Saturday. They definitely were rested and ready to play against Center.”
Meeker’s junior varisity team also played the Thunderbirds and Vikings JV teams winning both games with ease. The lady Cowboys jumped into quick leads and stayed on top for the remainder of the games. Meeker will host Hayden and Vail Christian Jan. 6-7. These will be their first games after the holiday break. Coach Chintala noted that he is “excited about the journey ahead for this team. They are really showing their dedication and ability on the court.”
